Disease Overview: Functioning Adrenal Tumors and Hirsutism
Functioning adrenal tumors are rare growths on the adrenal glands that overproduce specific hormones. When these tumors secrete an excess of androgens (male hormones), they can cause a condition known as hirsutism in women. Hirsutism is characterized by the abnormal growth of coarse, dark hair on areas such as the face, chest, and back. Beyond these physical changes, the hormonal imbalance can alter skin texture, disrupt menstrual cycles, and cause severe fertility issues. The primary treatment for large, symptomatic adrenal tumors is surgical excision (adrenalectomy), which halts the excess hormone production and typically allows the body to reverse many of the physical symptoms over time.
Patient Presentation
A 26-year-old female patient from Katihar presented with symptoms of hirsutism. Following a thorough medical evaluation, she was diagnosed with a large, functioning suprarenal (adrenal) tumor. The mass was notably large, measuring between 10 and 15 centimeters.
Surgical Intervention and Peri-operative Care
Before proceeding with surgery, the medical team prioritized optimizing the patient's intake to prepare her body for the operation. Due to the substantial size of the mass, the surgical team performed an open removal of the tumor. The procedure was complex, and the patient developed peri-operative complications that required her to be intubated for a period of time. Despite these initial challenges, she stabilized and ultimately recovered well from the surgery.
Post-Operative Recovery and Quality of Life
The successful removal of the tumor led to dramatic improvements in the patient's health and personal life. By the six-month mark post-surgery, her hirsutism had entirely disappeared. Her skin texture returned to normal, becoming soft again, and the resolution of these physical symptoms ultimately helped save her marriage.
Long-Term Follow-up and Obstetric Success
A couple of years after her recovery, the patient successfully became pregnant. However, due to her complex medical history, local doctors in her area were unwilling to manage her antenatal care. To ensure a safe pregnancy, she returned to Patna. She received comprehensive, supervised care from a coordinated team consisting of the original medical team and a gynecologist. This multidisciplinary approach culminated in the successful delivery of a healthy, live baby. Today, the patient and her family are happy and doing very well.
